With the deal ultimately done, Eevee’s Ed Quinton looks at why Serge Aurier and Arsenal is a match made in heaven…
It seems as though Arsené Wenger may have done it again. With an increasing number of rumours and the player himself telling Arsenal fans he’s on his way, Serge Aurier could be the latest piece of transfer genius conducted by the shrewd Arsenal manager. At a rumoured £7 million the 21 year-old right back could be the perfect replacement for the Sagna shaped hole in Arsenal’s defence.
Out with the old…
At the age of just 21 Aurier would be the young, exciting addition Arsenal need in replacing the aging Bacary Sagna. With his contract already up, the door is wide open for Sagna to walk straight out to a new club and it seems Arsene Wenger already has lined-up up the perfect replacement. In recent seasons Sagna has been on the back of much criticism from Arsenal fans, no longer seeming the right man for the job, his departure from Arsenal is at the perfect time for Serge Aurier to make an immediate impact.
Better than Juanfran
Another right-back Arsenal has been linked with is 29-year-old Athletico Madrid full back Juanfran. Although signing either Juanfran or Aurier would definitely be a step in the right direction, Aurier seems to have the upper hand on the Spanish man. Not just his speed or his young talent, Aurier has already proved himself to be capable in handling the pressures of being the leading right-back. Having played over 100 games in French Ligue 1 the young star scored six goals just last season for Toulouse FC and was able to worm his way into the Ligue 1 team of the season.
Pace to burn
Arsenal is notoriously known for being caught on the counter-attack by many Premier League sides, with Mertesacker being one of the slowest players to grace the game it leaves Arsenal wide open on the counter. Yet the contribution Aurier would be able to make going forward and tracking back would be vital to Arsenals cause. His electric speed means Aurier would make perfect cover for when the big centre back is caught sleeping, high up the pitch.
One of the great things about Sagna for Arsenal was that he could cover for centre back if needs be. This is the same for Serge Aurier where the Ivory Coast right-back is very versatile in playing both as a full-back and a holding midfielder. He has been used several times in this position for Toulouse, giving him the perfect experience to make cover for when Arsenal need him most.
Leads by example
Only at 21 Serge Aurier has already broken into the Ivory Coast national team set-up and played as captain for Toulouse on eight separate occasions. His leadership qualities and determination on the pitch could be the perfect boost that Arsenal need. Contributing going forwards and back this young powerhouse would work perfectly when linking up with Walcott down the right wing.
